There is no place like home
That was quite a long break from writing. I guess I took a while for settling down at a place, approximately 10,000 miles away from the only home that I have known in the last 25 years. I wonder if I will ever start thinking of my new place as ‘home’…
It’s ironical that I haven’t had much to do in the last 3 months, yet, I haven’t written a single blog. I have been meaning to write this for so many days now but every time I think of it, I decide to procrastinate it, because I seem to have all the time in the world anyway…The problem with being idle is you know you can do a lot of interesting things, which you haven't tried doing before. Yet, you tend to dilly-dally stuff, since you have a lot of time and things can always be done later...
As life has undergone a sea of changes in the last few months, I decided to list down all the things that were so characteristic of life back in India, which I miss very badly today. So here goes, starting from a broad topic and tapering to the more detailed stuff:
- Family
- Home
- Home-cooked food (which I am trying to simulate now!)
- Work
- Friends, people.
- temples
- festivals
- the MRTS train
- AUTO!!!! (I would easily rate this mode of transport as the best invention ever!)
- The noisy environment
- Iron-wala
- Indian television programs (NO, I do NOT mean the mega-serials!)
- Indian movies, theatres
- the slaphappy life
Yes…Absence indeed grows the heart fonder. Many of the items in the list above were so much taken for granted till a few months back. I never took the time to appreciate the little things that gave me so much comfort and happiness.
Life has always readily been offering me the next thing to do in the pipeline. Over these few months, a lot of things have been new to me. For the first time, I now sit back and explore, taking time for myself. There is a lot that I have to learn, lot to experience. Once I figure out what is next in the pipeline, I am sure I am going to pine for leisure. So I better make the most of the respite that I have now.
But whether I am busy or free, I always hate Monday mornings and love Friday evenings, for different reasons! The other side of the grass is always green…

It's good that some things haven't changed, albeit for different (greener?!!?) reasons.

I am sure you miss your mom's wonderful "vethal kuzhambu" + "coconut thogaiyal", "kesari", "pakoda" etc. With the festival season just starting, I am sure you will miss the "kozhakkattais" and "vella seedais"!

I read your blog and then I noticed this part. The "Location" part still shows "India". Hmmm... must be part of this blog :). I was away from home for a very short time within which I realised how much I had liked my "home". I bet you will also be missing the water problems, the power cuts, trains/buses running late, thalaivar (whoever it is for u) movies in theatre, cramped for space life, et al. which had become part of our lives that we miss these times which gave us good fodder for fun chats and what not. But, I am sure you will have more such "uniqueness" in your current "home". Do pitch in with the specialities.
